Wear is She Wednesday: Melanie B.

The following interview is from the Wear is She Wednesday Vintage collection, which means it was originally published before the website relaunch. I lost many of my old articles when revamping wearisshenow.com in 2021 (probably because Mercury was in retrograde or some shit) and am slowly re-uploading and slightly updating them manually from the depths of my computer files, one by one. Enjoy!

From the beautiful land of Austria comes the dynamic art history major and writer, Melanie B. Between her fluid, experimental wardrobe and her severe wanderlust, Melanie is the pure embodiment of what Wear is She Now is all about. Read on for Melanie's thoughts on being a Sagittarius, her biggest style icon and her best flea market find.

Hi Melanie! Please introduce you're wonderful self!

Hi there! I‘m Melanie "Mimi" B. I‘m twenty years old and live in Austria - that little country in the heart of Europe that the rest of the world mistakes for Australia. I currently study art history at the University of Vienna.

1. How would you describe your style?

That’s actually a really hard question. I don't know if I have one particular style that I always stick [to]. As a Sagittarius I‘m restless by nature. I always try to reinvent myself. [Sometimes] I dress very dreamy and feminine, other times I dress like a rocker and sometimes I look like I’m on my way to Woodstock. But one recurring theme in terms of my fashion sense is that it always has vintage vibes to it.

2. Where are your favorite places to shop and why?

I sometimes shop at stores like Urban Outfitters, Weekday or Zara which I try to avoid at all costs, since fast fashion really takes a toll on the environment and is not ethically produced.

But my favorite place to get my clothes from is my grandparents house. My grandpa is an antiquarian, so they [hoard] old things. My grandma always hooks me up with beautiful vintage pieces from the 60s-90s.

The rest I get from thrift stores. I think vintage clothing has so much history. Every piece has a story to it, which I love.

3. How did you discover your personal style or are you still discovering it?

My mum, when she was my age in the 90s influenced my style a lot. She is my personal style icon.

Other inspirations are Jane Birkin, Lana Del Rey, Florence Welch and the Great Muses of Rock & Roll like Uschi Obermaier, Bianca Jagger, Bebe Buell or Pamela des Barres. I also unironically like the style of 80s rockstars.

These are the main inspirations that I base my style on.

4. Do you have any current favorites? (podcasts, books, songs, etc?)

Probably an old copy of Leo Tolstoi's Anna Karenina from 1928 printed in Fraktur font that I found at a book flea market.

5. Aside from style, what other hobbies or interests do you have?

I love traveling. I’m basically fueled by insatiable wanderlust. I have a lifelong bucket list of places that I want to visit one day.

As an art history student I am interested in the past and all forms of art, music, languages, philosophies, cultures and subcultures developed by different generations of people all over the world. An intercategorical and intersectional approach to history is essential.

Other than that I am a writer who is too anxious to publish any of their work. So I kind of live in my own bubble of imagination, far away from criticism.

(A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: Publish it!!! -Veronica)

6. And the bonus question I like to ask everyone before they go: What’s something you’re really proud of right now?

Something I‘m really proud of is that I‘m slowly but steadily recovering from my mental health problems. I no longer let my trauma define me. I am reclaiming my sense of self which is a very empowering and crucial part of recovery.

Where else can we find you, Melanie?
